My two-year-old received the talkie for Christmas from his grandparents who live across the country. He gets very excited every morning when he pushes on the toys belly to hear if he has new messages. Even my technology challenged parents could figure out how to send and receive messages from my son. I would recommend this toy. As a bonus the toy has a really cute voice
This is such a wonderful toy! We got it as a gift from a long distance uncle. Not only can my child talk to him now she can also talk to grandma, and daddy while he's at work, grandparents from NY and many other relatives she loves and misses. The app is user friendly and my 3 year old learned to operate the toy in a few days. My older kids enjoy it as well. We just love everything about this!
My only grandson (age 4) lives in New York; I'm in Denver. I miss him so much! His new Toymail Talkie allows him to message me (he is in a singing stage now--I get melodies) whenever he wants. And I can respond anytime I want. It's a fun and easy way to keep in touch.
My daughter is 6 and this is by far her favorite gift from Santa this year. Surprisingly it has been extra fun for her mother and I as well. We have been sending songs, jokes and random silliness through her Piper (she named it after herself). Great toy.
The talkie is the perfect gift for a child who you don't want to have a phone but you want to give them their own independence. My little one is organising a sleep over it's fantastic and very safe.
I bought two of these...one for my daughter (6) and another for my niece (5). They live states away and love talking on the phone so figured this would be great. Well they talk just a couple times a day BUT my daughter and I talk often throughout the day.
Yesterday, I had to leave early in the morning and my daughter enjoyed a great day with her grandpa (my dad). It was wonderful...I sent her message around her wake up time to brush her teeth. Throughout the day I received cute little messages letting me know everything was going great, what she had eaten, and lots of "I love you" recordings.
This toy took 3 attempts to set up but overall it wasn't hard. The simplicity of use is virtually fool proof. The joy it brings is priceless.
My son received Hank the Dino for a Christmas gift. After having a bit of trouble getting my wifi to cooperate with the toy(wifi issue not toy issue) so I could pair it with my phone my son(4) took of with it. My niece and nephew also received the other 2 in the series. After a little bit of setup on everyone's phones, the family can now send the kids messages and the kids can send them right back. Right now my son likes to toss it around because it giggles. He also likes to send silly messages with my assistance to get the correct person ready for the message. E especially likes the voice changer feature. I like hanks cute little voice and giggle. It is a very cute toy and easy enough to work with. There are a couple things that I would like to see in the future software releases and I've already been in touch with customer support about it. (They are app features and not toy features. I think the toy is pretty awesome as it is.)
I travel for work on a semi-regular basis, and I've been looking for a way to engage my kids while I'm gone, while also avoiding the hassle and risks of socially connected products. (Hangouts, Skype, cell phones, etc). My wife got two of these for Christmas, and we couldn't be happier. They are cute, fun, and engaging. They work really well, and even the 4 year old has figured it out almost on her own. During setup I had some problems mostly attributed to an Android version of my phone. (I use an unlocked overseas model phone). I was stunned that when I wrote an email on Christmas, they not only responded in an hour - but ran an update of the Android app in about 4 hours to support my phone... and to boot, the support was not off-shore, but US based. What an awesome company, and product.
My only recommendation, and nothing I can dig a star about as I'm not sure how to address it, and it may go against another review I saw that complained about the toy soliciting attention (something they turned off), but the kids don't know when a new message has come in unless they are around the toy when the message comes in. It makes a noise, once, when a new message comes in, but if they are away from the toy, then - say at school... Well, they really have no idea they have a new message from dad waiting unless they go and push the button. Though thinking about this, I'm not sure if I would want it making a noise or something continuously beaconing "I've got mail??",... My plan is just to have them press the button when I'm away from time to time.
Super cool, innovative, and it also looks as though they will be building in more features as time goes on. (Connecting to different WiFi networks automatically would be nice... So if they toy goes from home to grandma's it still works, without Grandma having to understand what a WEP key is :) )
The step by step directions are spot on. Also, customer service is almost immediately available for any questions. Cute design and I can't wait for my son to start using him.
Love this toy! It's a great way to stay in touch with my kids while I'm away. Plus the customer service is great. I've been contacted numerous times to make sure that I have set it up and if I need help. It's refreshing to have a company care about me after I've purchased their product. Can't wait get one for my nephew who's across the US.
We purchased this as part of their pre-order Kickstarter campaign and love it! Our family is really enjoying the voice messages our kid is sending their way. The app is fairly intuitive and the toy is as well. My daughter just turned 4 and the buttons are easy enough for her to push.
Absolutely precious. Quality is a 10. Age-appropriate features is a 10. Set-up was very easy. I have seen a review to the contrary and I can't imagine this being the case unless some bugs were worked out before I received mine. Everything about this is just beyond cool- being able to receive voice messages from family is one thing, but the fact that my girls can SEND them also? I'm beyond impressed. It has been so hard to wait for Christmas to give this gift. Cannot wait to see their faces and show them how it works. My whole family is waiting, apps all set up, to chat w my girls. 5 stars easily
UPDATE TO MY MESSAGE BELOW:
I considered deleting my entire message and writing a new review of this incredible toy but I would not have the blessing of sharing my experience on the receiving end of some of the most fantastic customer service I have been privileged to experience - thank you Marla Bogaerts. Marla diligently worked to make a connection with me to address my problem. She gave me her undivided attention and was able to solve my problem most completely. Additionally she was able to answer all my questions. She's amazing!
This toy is FUN!!! I KNOW my daughter is going to have a blast sending messages to people she loves anytime SHE wants to (without needing to ask a grownup to borrow their phone). I'm so excited! Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all. 😉
Original message: "I'm so upset!! Because this is a Christmas present for my 8 year old daughter, I have kept it hidden since it arrived. She is away this weekend so I opened it to get it set up so she could use it on Christmas morning.
Well, I ordered Gory the SHARK - her favorite color is blue - it's what she requested. The box says Hank the Dino and I GOT Bitsy the BAT.
There is no time to return this, reorder and HOPE it comes in time.
To help you understand more clearly...my little one asks for NOTHING. Last Christmas she asked for food for kids who don't have food. This year I (all but) forced her to come up with something she'd like for herself. So, this isn't just one of 100 presents a child has asked for. This is the ONLY present she asked for and it's wrong.
I wouldn't want my peanut to be without a gift when Christmas gets here especially since I pushed so hard to get her to tell me what she would like. I feel like the air has been let out of my balloon. I'm so disappointed.
With an adorable exterior, but intensely simple technology within its guts, Toymail Talkie connects me to my fiery headed 4 year old at any moment she wants. If I am to be ANY sort of father to her, providing my daughter the knowledge that she can ALWAYS communicate with me will only help grow and strengthen our relationship as we age together. So thank you Toymail, for allowing me to always feel connected with my daughter even when I can't be with her.
This thing sounded so cool when I read about it, so I purchased this item through their kick-off campaign last April and just received it last week. My 5-year old daughter loves it, so I just ordered another one through Amazon to send to her best friend who moved away last summer. Sending messages through the phone and from the toy is easy and she has enthusiastically checked every morning and night to see who she has messages from. She calls the toy "Sendy" since it says "Message Sent" after you record it.
Because a primary concern is for kid's communication is privacy and safety, the makers chose to make the conversations a closed, private loop only available through WIFI. Any adult wishing to send messages must download the app and ask the parent for permission to be able to "talk" to the child. Children can send each other messages through the toy and messages can be up to 30 seconds.
Set-up was a bit of a pain, but once I figured it out, it worked well. Key things were to close out all apps on the phone, turn the brightness to high, and make sure you are on a 2.4GHz WIFI. There aren't wires but you do have to link a parent's phone to the toy in order to select your WIFI network. While using Bluetooth would have made it easier, as a parent, I appreciate taking the safer choice.
The toy also does silly things like laugh when shaken, snore when on its belly, and let you know sweetly when something didn't work. The company says they are developing additional content which could be exciting down the line too and add even more value.
As we get to know the toy better, there are some improvements I'd like to see, however it does what I had hoped. My kid is able to receive and send messages to loved ones across the globe, without the additional expense of cellular service, the worry of privacy, or the hassle of having her own "smart" device. She gets a cuddly toy and to chat with whom she wants, when she wants. That's pretty cool. Oh- and the price is great.
I sent a Talkie to my best friend who moved down south thinking that her daughter, who’s 5, would be able to use it to stay close to her grandparents. My friend sent me an invitation to connect to the toy, as well, and now her daughter and I are “pen pals” who exchange voice messages daily. The funniest messages she sends, I can go into the app and it let’s me share them, so I can message them to her mom.
Amazing product!! So much fun and so easy to use. Would highly recommend.
I live abroad and purchased these for my niece and nephew so we could stay in touch more easily (as well as their grandparents who live across the continent. So far, they seem to be a bit. A bit challenging for the kids to sort out how to use them at first, but they're on the younger end of the age spectrum for these toys. The voice messages are super cute, so that's a huge plus.
Grandma and 3 year old grandson send voice messages. Not sure which one likes it the most!
So much fun for my very young grandchildren to be able to stay in touch with their grandparents, aunts and uncles who are spread out all over the country! Great idea, and excellent support team to help with set up or questions!
My daughter received the Toymail Talkie for Christmas this year and she loves it! Even though it was gifted to my daughter, it is the best present my mom has never received. They love sending messages back and forth. My mom lives far away, so this helps to bring her a little closer to her granddaughters.
It took me a while to get it all setup, but it was well worth it. Gave it to my 2 1/2 year old niece as a Christmas gift. I live in CA. She's in TX. It's fun to know (via the internal accelerometer) when she's playing with the toy. I can send her a quick voice text. With her mom's help, she can use it to send voice messages to me or her distant grandparents, or other pre-approved family members (up to 10).
The Talkie is an excellent way to keep young children in contact with loved ones... I purchased Bitsy the Bat for my 16month old niece and nephew they love it! It was purchased because their father works away from home and has been gone for months at a time... they hear the tone and know it's him on the other side!! I love that their parents can control who speaks to them so it's safe!! Super easy to set up and the app and messages are free of charge!! It stores I think up to ten 30second recordings... that they love to replay! I give 4 stars because there are time when it seems the messages are VERY delayed! Other than that I and they love it... so do their parents!!
My kids received a talkie for Xmas and love it! It was easy to set it up and two family members have added the app and are now connected with the toy as well. My kids love getting messages from family members and are really enjoying the toy!
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 3year old son to stay in touch with his dad who works out of state. Set up was easy and we got other family members who were visiting for Christmas to get the app as well. The app is even available on the Amazon app store so my girls have the app on their Kindle fires. They are all having a blast sending messages to the talkies.
Kiddo and I LOVE this toy. We message back and forth throughout the day. Our son is 15 months so not really speaking in complete sentences, but he figured out how to create messages (very simple design/usage), and I get a kick out of the squealish/gibberish messages he sends periodically while playing with the toy. I respond with messages singing, echoing his gibberish, etc.
Set-up was unlike any other toy I've purchased, but it's not difficult. Involves connecting it to your household wifi via your phone. Took just a couple minutes.
Has worked like a charm since we bought it! It's great!
Purchased this for our 4 year old grandson who lives in another state. We are beyond excited to have the ability to be in his life through messages everyday! Love the quality and know this will be fun for all !
Received the toy in the mail and had everything set up prior to arrival so sending a message was VERY simple. We are so excited about our talkie!
After two days i got it to work.. now that it works itbis great. Anyone who downloads the app and as the parebt you accept them can send a message to your kid. Set up sucked... alot. For that i can only give four stars.
First it did not work with my phone. I have an iphone six plus on a tmobile network. I spent two days trying to not throw it out a window. I had to use my husbands phone to get the toy working. But at that point it still didnt work right with my phone. I couldnt hear her messages just white noise. Then I re update my carrier and phone software then reinstall the app to get it to work. And several phone resets. That was a major pain to figure out and get working.
I did email customer service. They had a quick response time. The first lady I talked to was very nice. She did not know what the problem was. She was going to escalate my ticket but I had figured it out by myself. Once I told her I figured it out she asked me what I did so that way she can help others in the future. Very responsive and their customer service.
We live abroad, so I thought this would be the perfect toy for my 5-year-old son, and it was! Set-up was quick and easy and my son figured out how to send and receive messages in no time. The great thing is, that new updates are constantly being developed so the toy gets upgrades and can do new things. The toy itself is nice and soft and the quality seems quite good. I have washed it once in the machine and it kept its shape just fine.
My son is so happy that he can independently chat with his grandparents and cousins and I am so happy that our family feels a little more connected and involved in his every day life.
On top of it being a great product, the customer service is absolutely amazing. They are quick to respond and don't give up until your problem is solved.
I will definitely be getting another one for my younger son's 3rd birthday and can highly recommend this toy to anyone with young children.
My kids love it!! They talk to daddy all day when he's at work and he really gets a kick out of their messages. 😊❤
Thank you so much for inventing this and marketing it !! One of my grandchildren who lives across the country from me just got one and it makes us both feel so much closer ! We can say good morning, good night , and anything else we want to and we don't have to wait for an adult to make a call or dial up on skype. Thank you , thank you, thank you.
I was in the hospital for a surgery that has turned into an extended stay. My grandsons were having a hard time understanding why they couldn't visit their Nana. They just got Talkies and through the app on my IPad, we have a new ritual, where they tell me all about their day before bedtime and I can let them know I am thinking about them and how much I love them.
I bought 2 of these. One for my son, and one for his best friend. They send messages to each other and they are only 4 years old! I send messages to my son because I travel a lot for work, so now we can keep in touch, especially before bedtime. He knows when Daddy is away, he can always use Hank the Dino to say hi whenever he feels like it. This product is so cool. It's like playing telephone for the modern age. Highly recommended!
My son's favorite Christmas present!
Very cool idea and lots of potential. Customer service acted like I was their first customer and wanted very badly to make sure I was satisfied and able to use properly. Def can use some tweaks but for a new toy with a unique idea, 5 stars all day. I highly recomend for your child, keeps my 6 year old son from needing cell when sleeping over at grandmas house. Love it. Thanks guys!
My husband & I recently divorced so I had been looking for a solution for my 8 year old daughter to be able to "call me" when she's at her Dad's house. My older daughter has a cell phone, but I didn't feel my 8 year old was old enough for one yet. However, I still wanted her to have the freedom... so after looking at a lot of smart watches for kids (Tinitel, Kurio, Filip, etc) I stumbled upon this somehow & spontaneously bought it for her for Christmas.
She loves it! It is adorable. It is easy for her to use. She especially loves the whee's and giggles and snores.
We've had to pair it a few times when it's lost her contacts. And the pairing process was noooot as easy as I had thought. You put the talkiebox on the screen after typing in your wi-fi password, then it should connect & pair. However -- I had to do it three times before it stopped giving me an error, and each time I change wifi networks or I change/add contacts int he app I've had to had to re-pair just to get it to work. She's also had some trouble having to press hard enough to get the messages to play or holding too long on the button or pressing it too quickly too close together causing her to skip new message sometimes. And, she's missed messages and forgets to check them after awhile (I end up having to remind her) -- so I wish that there was a (reasonable) way to make it keep dinging or something (a light maybe?) that shows she has a message waiting.
The biggest amount of feedback I have is that this toy probably isn't made for what I wanted (something she could take her to Dad's house and message me with) because it relies on having her father set up the toy at his house on his wifi. I can't figure out how I would make the toy work without having to rely on him and I've asked him now repeated to create an account and pair it to his wifi but he hasn't-- thus she is unable to use it to send me messages until she's back on my wifi network. AND I have to change that every-time we go to a new location (like her grandparents house, friend's houses, etc-- it doesn't intuitively just sync to multiple networks that are pre-configured)
Despite all that-- we bought another one for my older daughter (Bitsy, the Bat)! Because she was so in love with her little sister's (Gory, the Shark). AND Toymail is incredibly open to making updates and progressing this product-- for instance, they're putting out a release soon that will save wifi networks (which will eliminate my problem above) and they were very interested in my notification feedback. I think they're definitely on the right track to an amazing toy so I'm over all very happy that I bought this instead of a watch for her despite the minor inconveniences. It's definitely not as robust as a smart watch would have been (which I knew! so I wasn't REALLY expecting that) but I think it's the perfect balance of communication and fun for my kid.
We love our talkies !
I bought 3 of them for my boys, initially , while your campaign was on. Then, when I realize what a cool way to keep in touch this is for children, I ended up buying 4 more for my nephew and my nieces who live in Romania, Italy and Great Britain .
Now my children send messages all over Europe to their cousins and aunts and uncles whenever they want to and it's safe and it gives them a certain kind of freedom and it actually makes them communicate more which I love , given the fact that our family is so far away from us ( we live in U.S.)
The one thing that my children mentioned is that they were sad when some of their favorite messages got erased because they received other messages . Maybe a favorite message option that would save the ones they love ?
Overall, both children and parents are so happy with these talkies! It brings all of our worlds closer .
Set up took a little bit with the first ones and it was a brezze the second time around.
My siblings and sister in law all downloaded the app, even the ones without kids and talkies , because they can still send messages back and forth with my children. I honestly didn't expect my children to be so excited about them, I thought I would have to encourage them to use it.
We would definitely recommend these talkies !
Also, customer service is awesome. They are prompt and extremely helpful and respectful and friendly . A great company who will go far .
It has been amazing!! I love being able to talk to my best friend's son. It has been hard since they moved across the country. I am so happy to be able to feel connected to them in such a fun way.
I love the Talkie! I should note that we are *not* a tech-toy family. My kids have zero toys that light up and make noise (not counting the talkie). I used to work in the education technology industry, and I know that most of those products are triumphs of marketing and little else.
However, I often travel for business for up to a month at a time, and I typically take my kids (ages 4 and 6) with me. The last time, the hardest thing for them was that they could only communicate with my husband when he and I were both available to facilitate a video chat. I remember saying to my friend, "I wish there was just voicemail for kids!" Lo and behold, TALKIE appeared just weeks later.
It's simple enough for my younger child to use, and they love getting messages from their aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents, as well as us when we're away.
I like that it's safe and intuitive; it gives the kids independence in communication while also allowing me to ensure that I know who they can talk to.
The app needs a little work--it's not super intuitive and many family members have found it confusing. But the customer service people at Toymail are incredibly responsive and helpful, and I've been impressed with the changes they've made in response to user feedback.
I got these for my grandkids! I love that they send me silly messages throughout the day...and that the parents can control the time they can send them so no middle of the night messages! I highly recommend these for keeping in touch.
These things are fantastic! Was able to set them up easily to connect little cousins across the country, and they are absolutely enchanted!
Aside from the product itself, Toymail has amazing customer service. We had email and chat replies within minutes on a weekend morning! Very refreshing, and reassuring to have a company have our back during the setup process.
I just bought Hank and Gory to give to my grandsons for Hanukkah. They're pretty young, but I'm looking forward to many little conversations with them over the years!
The set-up was very easy. Download the app to your phone and sign-up. Put in batteries and sync it with your wifi.
We'll see how easy it is to change it to Their wifi. The company seems to be very willing to help. They have sent out emails with different help videos and docs to make sure the process stays smooth.
I have a 5 year old son that LOVES his Talkie. He sends good morning and good night messages to everyone every day. It is a great way for him to talk with his grandmas and aunts without having to use our phones. I was worried he would get bored with it, but after 3 months he still loves it. We've had glitches but customer support responds very quickly and resolves the problem. Super easy to use and he can do it all on his own. His face lights up when he hears the tone that says he has a new message.
A fantastic way for snowbird grandparents to communicate their little "grands" while away!
Thank you for giving us a new way for our blended family to keep in touch with the youngest one in our bunch when she is away. This is the best idea ever. I've tested it out a couple times and it works just as it should. Set up was a little complicated because the arrow points to the sensor but I took it as it was pointing to the bottom of the device (I know, I'm not always the smartest cookie)... but once I figured out the sensor was on the side (right where the arrow is pointing lol) it set up super quickly.
Thank you again and I cannot see what updates are coming down the road!
I bought a talkie for my two older daughters (ages 8 and 6). That was three weeks ago, and they still play with it everyday. That alone is pretty special - our house is cluttered with toys they have played with for a few hours and then never touch again. It's particularly great when I'm traveling or just late coming home and I can leave them a message to let them know I'm thinking about them, or ask them what they want for dinner, etc.
The app is not perfect, but it works, And the company does seem to be responsive to customer feedback and is continually pushing out updates.
I convinced some friends to buy it also for their kids, and so my daughters are now excited about being able to connect to their friends now also too. Great toy.
Great toy! It's fun when Hank chirps up on an otherwise quiet day.
I pre-ordered two of these (a Dino and a Shark, for my daughter and niece/nephew in the UK to talk to each other) months before release, accepting the risks of being an early-adopter: I’ve crowdfunded/pre-ordered many gadgets in the past, and almost always ended up making allowances based on being in the first run. But when the Talkies finally arrived, I was really impressed with how polished everything felt right out of the box. Everything--from the packaging to the app and the toy itself--felt like a fully realised premium product, well worth the ~$79 each I paid for them. Now they're even cheaper at $59!
One of my concerns was security: how they were going to prevent this becoming yet another vulnerable 'Internet of Things' device that some reprobate might hack and send bad messages to kids. But the implementation of the 'Trusted Circle' seems well-designed and easy to manage, so I feel comfortable now.
Best of all: the automatic firmware updates. While I'm looking forward to seeing what additional Apps Toymail might introduce, the fact they can patch any bugs or security flaws that might emerge in the future is SO important, and a feature not present in a lot of other 'Smart' devices, let alone children's toys.
If I had one criticism it's that the instructions in the app and on the site are a little thin when it comes to additional features (like Apps), but customer service have been really helpful and responsive for me, so hopefully the FAQs will start filling out as more people get the toys. And setup/using the toy are all really self-explanatory so there's no steep learning curve for you or your child.
But that's all tech stuff... They're fun toys, too! Cute, soft, cuddly, bright and funny. Durable, too: the 'voice box' hardware inside feels like it could withstand a good bit of abuse. I'm sure they'll be part of the family for years to come!
My niece and nephew live in DC and I have a very busy job as a physician in NYC so it's tough to keep in touch. I can say that all three of us love this product. Hearing their messages helps me get through a long day and the whole family has gotten closer, making the holiday season so much more enjoyable. Highly recommended.
